Are you finding your refrigerator will not stay cold?
Is your answer to get a new fridge? Not necessarily the choice you should make. Here is a list of 6 things you should check first!
1. Incorrect Temperature Setting
Inside your refrigerator on the internal wall or the top of the fridge, you will find a temperature control. This could have been knocked when something was put in, removed from, or rearranged in the fridge. If this is not the problem, continue reading.
There may be a piece that must be replaced within the fridge thermostat. You can do this by following the steps below (making sure your fridge is powered off and unplugged from the outlet)...
1. To access the thermostat, you must first remove the temperature control knob, then remove the cover. This will now make the shaft of the thermostat visible.
2. Loosen the connecting nut of the thermostat's shaft before you remove the screw-hole bung then remove the screw that is behind it.
3. Pull this assembly off of the wall of the fridge to make the cover of the thermostat visible. You must remove the cover from the top and the bottom before you can push out the thermostat.
4. Disconnect the wires from the thermostat (taking a picture of how the wires are hooked up to ensure properly putting the unit back together).
5. Now you must remove the capillary, then the sleeve (if the sleeve is fitted) from the capillary.
6. Now you can unwind your new fridge thermostat and begin to reconnect and put together the new thermostat.
2. Dirty Coils
This is an easy job, one that you may not of ever thought of doing. Simply unplug your refrigerator, get behind it and gently (very gently, as they are easily damaged) clean the coils off with a vacuum cleaner. This should take no longer than a few minutes and should be done every 6 months.
A bonus of doing this, also can help lower the energy bill the refrigerator uses by lower the amount it needs to cool your refrigerator!
3. Blocked Air Vents
A fridge that is stocked and full too much, can be prevented from allowing the air vents to circulate correctly, resulting in your refrigerator being unable to get cool. To ensure this does not occur, make sure the food items in your fridge are not touching the back or sides of your fridge.
4. Damaged Door Seal
Your door may be unable to seal properly so it is always constantly cooling but not able to retain this. This will cause your fridge to not be able to stay cold. This is an easy fix which just requires the seal to be replaced because it is damaged, split, or cracked.
5. Incorrect Fridge Placement
Your fridge being unable to hold a cool temperature could be a result of something that seems very minor. Your fridge must have at least an inch between it and any walls/cupboards that surround it. Make sure your refrigerator has at least this inch spacing, if it does not, try creating this space and see if your fridge will now hold a temperature.
6. Faulty Compressor
About 90% of the time your fridge cooling issue is caused by one of the previous 5 issues. There is the odd time that it can be the compressor causing this issue. This is obvious to detect because you be able to hear an obvious clicking coming from the fridge. If this is happening, it is most likely because the compressor is over heating or it is not getting the right amount of power to it and it cannot start.
